The Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has given the TSC one week notice to hold a consultative meeting over Teacher Professional Development (TPD) Modules.
KNUT Secretary-General Wilson Sossion who was Speaking in Maanzoni, Machakos County on Tuesday, has called on Cabinet Secretary for Labour and Social Protection Simon Chelugui and his Education counterpart George Magoha to get involved in the issue, failure to which teachers will stay away from classes which will paralyze education in all schools.
On July 12, 2019, the Employment and Labour Relations Court ruled against the implementation of the disputed TPD module since they fell short of professional development programmes as required by the TSC’s career development and progression regulations. The ruling received massive support from Knut Secretary-General who is also a nominated senator
The court’s decision insisted that The Teachers Service Commission should not implement TPD on grounds that it does not comply with the regulations of the statutory instruments 2013.
Mr. Sossion further criticized the teachers’ employer on their plans to deduct Ksh6000 from their income every year calling it an injustice. He said that the TSC should stick to its mandate as an employer and not a policymaker.
He indicated that teachers have no trust with the TPD modules which can be used to replace academic papers, which have been used to promote teachers as per the schemes of service.
Knut through its secretary general has told Labour CS through a letter dated February 18, 2020, to convene a meeting between the conflicting parties within seven days.
He told the teachers’ employer to be ready for more fights in court.
