The Teachers Services Commission (TSC) has denied claims circulating on print and social media that it has hired interns on a permanent basis.
TSC’S head of communications Beatrice Wababu indicated that “I wish to state here that this information is incorrect and it’s unfortunate.” She was however quick to mention that the commission is addressing the issue of interns.
Many teachers were however not impressed that statment. Some of the sentiments they shared include:
Winnie Njuki: “Please Tsc address the issue of hiring this interns on permanent basis as the stipend is also too low and cost of living in Kenya today is too high. These interns am sure are suffering and a teacher suffering can never deliver.”
Mwaniki Bonface: “Their fate should also be considered. The real internship reason is to improve skills not curbing the need for more teachers to cater 100% transition. With this, it means you are evading employing teacher and seeking cheap labour in the name of internship.”
TSC had hired teachers on internship basis to cope up with the increasing number of students being admitted to secondary schools due to the Jubilee Government’s 100% transition to Secondary school policy.
There have also been complaints from teachers on internship that they have never received their payment for the last 3 months.
