There are over 144 road signs in Kenya. What follows is a classification of road traffic signs, their meanings and where they are used.
Classifications of Road Signs in Kenya
Road signs in Kenya are classified into three categories
Class A signs
They comprise of regulatory road signs which are further divided into three groups.
- Priority signs: These are the most important road signs Kenya. They comprise of two major road signs which are Stop and Give Way.
- Prohibitory signs: These are road signs that prohibit users from taking certain actions. They are circle and triangle in shape. They include Entry forbidden for motor vehicles, no overtaking, speed limit, etc.
- Mandatory signs: These are road signs that must be obeyed. They have a blue background. Examples of mandatory signs include One-way traffic, Maximum speed required, all vehicles to turn left at junction, etc.
Class B signs
- Warming or cautionary or hazard Signs: These are road signs that caution road users of impending danger. They are triangle in shape with a red border. Examples of warning signs include children crossing ahead, road works in progress ahead, roundabout ahead, etc.
Class C signs
- Information or facility signs: These are signs that are used to provide information to road users. They are normally rectangular in shaoe. Examples of information signs include One-way traffic, Lifesaver, parking ahead, no exit, Taxi, Parking Place, Bus Stop, Pedestrians Crossing, Street Name, etc.
Where are Road Signs in Kenya Located?
Most road signs in Nairobi are found on the left or right-hand side of the road. However, some symbols like Exit from the main road, Hazard Demarcation are printed or marked on the road.
Highway code, mechanical signals, Traffic Signs, and Road Signs provide regulations and guidelines on how roads should be used in Kenya by drivers and pedestrians.
NTSA Traffic Signs Test
Before you are issued with a driving license in Kenya, you must pass NTSA theory and practical driving test. Traffic or Road signs form part of the theory test.
A board with all the road signs is available in the test room. The NTSA examiner will randomly point at road signs and you will have to say what they mean. You will need to correctly name about two-thirds of the signs before continuing to the next practical test step.
