Madaraka day is a national holiday in Kenya that is celebrated on 1st June every year. Madaraka means authority or freedom. On 1st June 1963, Kenya took over from the British and had the authority to rule over themselves after being ruled by the British colony since 1920. On this day Kenyans celebrate being a free nation.

On Madaraka day, Kenyans gather at a specified stadium to celebrate. In the stadium, they are entertained with music, comedy, and military performance. The president and some top political leaders give live speeches where they pay tribute to Kenyans who fought for Kenya’s independence. Some Kenyans are also rewarded for their excellent service to the country.
