The Ministry of Labour has announced that it is working on the final sections of the labour migration bill (which can be cited as the Labour Migration Management Act, 2023) that will be introduced in parliament soon to address issues related to the recruitment of Kenyans to work in foreign countries like Saudi Arabia through recruitment agencies.
While speaking during the Labor Migration conference, The Ministry of Labour and Social Protection PS Mwadime indicated that his ministry has has finalized the labour migration management bill. The bill seeks to enforce the existing legislation framework that governs labour migration. Further, the Ministry through the National Employment Authority (NEA) has continued to regulate the private recruitment agencies with a view to facilitate safe, orderly, regular and humane migration.
The bill seeks to address problems like the Eldoret case, where residents paid thousands of shillings to recruitment agencies to work abroad, but the agencies failed to offer any jobs or refund the money.
The bill also seeks to introduce Voluntary saving schemes services, migrant workers’ portal, provide guidelines on the advertisement of jobs by private employment agencies, etc.
