Newly elected MPs have already kicked a storm before they are even sworn in. Led by Homabay Women Rep Gladys Wanga and Suba North MP Millie Odhiambo, the legislators showed resolve to oppose the pay cut SRC introduced in the new pay structure for civil servants and state officials. MPs are set to earn Kshs 621,000, down from the previous Kshs 750,000. Mrs Wanga is on record explicitly stating, “we will not allow SRC to mistreat MPs, make us beggars.” Kiambu Women Rep. Gathoni wa Muchomba unashamedly said, “I need a good salary to maintain the Mheshimiwa outlook.” Unconfirmed reports suggest that Kiambu residents are already collecting signatures to block the swearing in of wa Muchomba.
What baffles most is that SRC published the new salary structure in July, meaning the MPs went on the campaign trail knowing very well what they were to earn if elected or re-elected into the August house. Funny enough, there is no division between NASA and Jubilee parties on this one; it is apparent the legislators are united in greed.
The move has not sat well with most tax payers strongly condemning this show of greediness. Especially in consideration of the fact that nurses are still on strike and the country is struggling with an ever increasing public debt that now stands at about Kshs 4.5 trillion.
It is important note that a few MPs have indicated that they are not in support of the move to push for higher wages. Some of them are Mohammed Ali (Jicho Pevu) of Nyali, Jaguar of Starehe
Just to categorically state; I am not in support of a pay rise. Count me out. #MPsPay #mwamkompya #starehe
