India has announced plans to ban reselling of .IN domain names. In a draft amendment published by .IN Registry, the organization mandated with management of the .IN ccTLDs, India plans to amend the registrar accreditation agreement to prohibit domain registrants (domain owners or resellers) from grabbing, auctioning, drop catching, and selling of the .IN domain names at an exceptionally higher price than the published MRP.
MRP in this case refers to the maximum retail price that a domain is supposed to be sold for. This means if you register a .IN domain name, you are not allowed to sell it for more than its retail price. For domain investors, this does not make profit sense. There would be no need of investing in .IN domains because the domain registration price needs to remain the same as resell price.
Domain buying and selling platforms like Godaddy’s Dan.com have already issued a statement saying that they will not allow reselling of .IN domain names on their marketplace.
IN Registry is inviting feedback from the public on the proposed amendments. You can submit your feedback to registry@nixi.in by 17th July 2023.
