Curfew in Kenya explained: President Uhuru Kenyatta declared a 10 hours curfew in Kenya starting from Friday 27th March 2020 but some people will be exempted from the curfew.
What is a Curfew?
A curfew is an order given by the head of state that restricts people from being outside their homes within the specified hours. In the Kenyan Curfew case, everyone other than the list of the exempted persons provided below will be required to be indoors from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM morning hour.
The curfew begins from Friday 27th March 2020. There are no specified dates when the curfew will end.
List of Persons exempted from Curfew in Kenya
The professionals whom the curfew does not apply to include;
- Health Workers and Professionals (Nurses, Doctors, Clinicians, Physicians, Technicians, Pharmacists e.t.c)
- Public health workers
- Sanitation officers in counties
- Nation Security workers
- Journalists and Media Staff
- Kenya Power Workers
- Food Dealers
- Food Distributors
- Food Wholesalers
- Transporters of farm produce
- Supermarkets, Mini-markers and hypermarkets
- Distributors of of petroleum and oil products
- Telecommunication operators and service providers
- Financial Institutions and Payment services
- Emergency response services
- Registered private Security firms
The curfew in Kenya was announced on Wednesday 25th March 2020 and will take effect on 27th March.
The professions exempted from the curfew listed above need to have a document that identifies who they are other than National ID. For example journalists need to have an accreditation press card from the Media Council of Kenya.
