Professor Stephen Kiama will continue serving as the acting vice chancellor of University Of Nairobi. This is after Education CS George Magoha told the Labor Court that he had withdrawn the revocation letter against Prof Kiama as the university Vice-Chancellor. Prof Magoha came to his decision as a result of an out-of-court settlement between him and Prof Kiama.
The withdrawal is a major boost to Prof Kama who had faced opposition from a section of the university staff and students when his appointment was made public by UoN Council chair Prof Julia Ojiambo earlier in January.
CS Magoha had also revoked his promotion terming it unprocedural and even dissolved the council. He then reinstated Prof Mbeche, the deputy VC in charge of finance, planning, and development, as acting VC.
In protest against his removal from office, Prof Kiama took the matter to court suing the CS and the Attorney-General and listed the UoN, Prof Mbeche and the Public Service Commission as interested parties. He claimed he was legally appointed to serve for a five-year term and he began working on January 6 as per the Universities Act and the university’s charter.
Justice Maureen Onyango who was hearing the case declared it settled on Thursday 27th February 2020. He asked the two to agree on who the vice chancellor of UON is.
