The financial year’s budget in Kenya is read in parliament by the Cabinet Secretary (CS) for National Treasury and Economic Planning (previously Minister for Finance). The budget outlines the government’s planned revenue and expenditure for the upcoming financial year.
Budget Reading Date
The financial year in Kenya begins from July 1st of one year to June 30th of the following year. It is during this period that the government executes its fiscal policies and manages public funds. The budget reading day occurs on the second Thursday of June every year. This year’s budget will be read on June 6, 2024.
During the budget reading day, the Cabinet Secretary for National Treasury reads the budget proposals to the members of parliament (national assembly), outlining the government’s plans for revenue generation, allocation of funds to various sectors, tax changes and policies to be implemented. The proposals are converted into law through the passing of the finance bill of that year.
Budget reading day is not a public holiday in Kenya. Therefore, citizens are expected to go about their daily activities, including going to work, as usual.
Once the budget has been read, we do (every year) publish a summary and a full pdf of the budget statement on this website under the business section.
