The 2021 Global Partnership for Education (GPE) summit that was co-hosted by President Uhuru Kenyatta and Prime Minister Boris Johnson in London, UK (United Kingdom), announced on 29th July 2021 that it had raised $4 billion from donors and partners through pledges.
The funding will go into supporting 175 million children in over 90 countries and territories to learn.
GPE 2021 Summit pledges breakdown
The 2021 GPE Summit brought together leaders from the business sector, private foundation, and government to help raise the funds. Below is a list of some of the pledges made.
- The EU pledged $ 830 million (largest donor) (€100 million a year, for 7 years)
- The UK Government pledged $600 million (largest government donor)
- Norway pledged $430
- France pledged €333 million (euros)
- Islamic Development Bank pledged $200 million
- Germany pledged €100 million
- Ireland pledged €60 million
- Netherlands € 50 million (euros)
- Arab Coordination Group $40 million
- Finland pledged €25 million
- Italy pledged €25 million
- LEGO foundation pledged $10 million (largest private foundation donor)
- Dubai Cares (UAE-based global philanthropic organization) pledge total is now $4 million
G7 leaders jointly pledged at least $2.75 billion
GPE’s target was to raise at least $ 5 billion in five years. It, therefore, fell $ 1 billion short of the target.
18 heads of state pledged to spend $192 billion on education domestically by 2025.
