Skyward Express Launches Direct JKIA to Mombasa Flights

Skyward Express today inaugurated a new direct flight route from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport ((JKIA) in Nairobi to Mombasa.

Speaking at the launch event, Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport Kipchumba Murkomen congratulated Skyward Express for enhancing domestic air transport. “Last year, they were the first airline to launch service to Kakamega, bringing commercial flights to Western Kenya for the first time,” he stated.

Murkomen noted this new Mombasa route, along with Kenya Airways recently resuming Eldoret flights, demonstrates the growth of Kenya’s aviation sector. The government aims to create an enabling environment for airlines to keep expanding routes and options.

One recent initiative was exempting aircraft parts importers from paying value-added tax last year. This reduces costs for aviation businesses operating in Kenya.

Looking ahead, the Cabinet Secretary said the government wants to establish an East African Community customs union to facilitate regional routes for carriers like Skyward Express. This would reduce administrative and financial burdens across member countries.

Under Kenya’s open skies policy, more foreign airlines are being allowed entry while ensuring a balance to protect local businesses. “We are working to lure more aviation companies here and create jobs,” Murkomen stated.

The new Nairobi-Mombasa route provides an affordable air travel option linking Kenya’s capital and coastal tourism hub.
