Twitter username change rate limited explained

Twitter username change rate limit explained

Have you ever tried changing your Twitter username and received an error message saying, “Sorry, you are rate limited. Please wait a few moments then try again“?

The Issue

This error happens when you try to change your username too quickly. This article focuses on rate limiting specifically associated with changing names or usernames on Twitter.

According to our experience, Twitter sets a limit of 3 username changes on the same device per day, though they do not say this. A new account might have an even lower limit.

Twitter (now X) supposedly does this to prevent its database from getting overloaded with too many database changes.

Trying to bypass the limit by clearing your browser cookies, changing your IP address, or clicking the save button several times can lead to longer limits.

The Solution

We faced the same issue when trying to change the username for the Twitter accounts that we operate. It took us 24 hours to be able to make the change. If you have not violated any other Twitter rules, you should be able to change your username after 24 hours. This fix happens automatically without having to contact Twitter.
