UASU to hold protest against housing levy and tax increases

UASU protest against housing levy in finance bill 2023

The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) will hold demonstrations in opposition to the proposed housing levy in the Finance Bill 2023. The housing levy aims to impose a tax of 3% on the monthly basic salary of workers in order to generate funds for the government’s affordable housing project in Kenya.

UASU members will march towards the Parliament building on May 29, 2023, to present a petition to present their concerns regarding the high taxation and housing levy addressed in the Finance Bill 2023. The union members’ leaders indicated in a press statement that they strongly oppose the introduction of the housing levy and seek to express their dissent through a public demonstration.

UASU argues that the levy, in addition to existing taxes and deductions, would further strain employees’ finances and diminish their disposable income.

The proposed 3% housing levy and tax increases in the finance bill 2023 have drawn criticism from many Kenyans due to the potential financial burden they will impose on Kenyans. Other civil servants and the opposition party have also threatened to hold demonstrations if the finance bill 2023 is not amended.
