Student Leaders Salary and earnings: SGC

student leaders of the month

Student leaders play a critical role in the running of higher institutions of learning. But do they get paid?

Every university and college in Kenya has a student governing council  (SGC) headed by either the president or chair. The New University Act reduced the student governing Council into 4  and others members  picked from electoral colleges.

How much do student leaders earn?

One of the greatest misconception among students is that student leaders do have a basic salary. Well, you will be supervised to know that almost all student leaders in Kenya are not paid.  Only a few of Kenya’s private university do pay their student leaders ksh. 16,000 to ksh. 20,00 per month. But Public Universities do not pay their student leaders.

Where do student leaders get money from?

You will notice that once a student has been elected as a student leader he or she changes his/her lifestyle. Student leaders get their money through allowances. That is when they attend senate meetings. They also get their earnings through premises that the university gives them a right to own which they sell out (example of such is moi’s MUSO and UON’s SONU).
