The student leaders are in defense of fellow students pursing biotechnology courses arguing that the ban on GMO is affecting their studies-Research. The student leaders from the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Moi University, Jomo Kenyatta and Egerton are accusing the government of double standards as most of the foods imported to Kenya are GMO  while local production is being banned.

While speaking to Kenyayote, Moi University student organization chair  Towett Ngetich indicated “We feel students should be aware of the dark future we are heading into. Where GMO imports are allowed but local production is banned

They further added “As student leaders we are against the ban of GMO because it is simply politics. If GMO was harmful, then let the government close down all research facilities, ban bio tech courses and further ban its importation.  There seems to be selective justice where cartels in the government run importation business and want to protect their interests

Legislators had earlier passed a legislation that effected the ban  on the production of GMO
