Safaricom has today announced that starting February 5th, 2024, users with registered Mpesa mobile numbers will no longer be able to send money to unregistered mobile money customers.
According to a notice published by Safaricom on February 3, 2024, even if a mobile line is registered with Safaricom, you will still not be able to send money to it unless it has activated its Mpesa account. This was possible before February 5, 2024.
Safaricom added that mobile numbers registered with Mpesa will continue to enjoy the convenience of sending and receiving money across various mobile money service providers, such as Airtel Money and T-Kash.
To comply with the new rules, customers who have not yet registered for Mpesa can visit Safaricom Shops or Mpesa Agents with their ID cards to complete the registration process.
The decision was made to ensure that Safaricom customers engaging in mobile money transfers adhere to Mpesa terms and conditions.
