No New Vice Chancellor, No Graduation-Moi University Protesting Staff

cs Fred Matiang'i

Moi University staff and locals have taken to the streets protesting the prolonged appointment of a new Vice Chancellor. The staff has threatened to avert the upcoming graduation ceremony if a new vice chancellor is not appointed by September 22, 2016.

Reports indicate that DVC Prof. Nathan Ogechi is likely to be appointed in acting capacity as Vice Chancellor a move that has angered the locals and staff

The staff and locals are accusing the Education Cabinet secretary (CS) Dr. Fred Matiangi of his intention to impose to a Vice Chancellor of his choice. This comes shortly after Baringo senator Gideon Moi indicated that they are going to defend their own people in job appointments. A statement that has largely been misinterpreted by the locals to mean that the Vice Chancellor must come from within the local community.

However, CS Matiangi has thrashed such assertions claiming that public universities should not be localized.

UPDATE: Shortly after posting this article CS Matiangi announced the appointment of  Prof Laban Ayiro as acting Moi University vice chancellor
