As cases of persons reported by the Ministry of Health to have tested positive of Coronavirus in Kenya hit four (by 17th March 2020), Moi University has joined a list of learning institutions that have suspended learning until further notice.
In a statement issued by the University Senate on Tuesday 17th March 2020, the University indicates that it made the decision to suspend learning activities following a directive issued by President Uhuru Kenyatta on 15th March 2020 to have all learning institution close by 20th of March.
The statement by Moi University received by Kenyayote reads in part:
“Following the Presidential directive on containment of Corona Virus (Covid-19) and pursuant to the provisions of the Universities Act and Moi University Statutes, a special meeting of the University Senate held on Tuesday 17th March, 2020 has made the following decisions:
That the University is closed indefinitely with immediate effect and, therefore, all lectures and related academic activities are suspended immediately.
All students (Residential and Non-residential) are directed to vacate the hostels and University premises and its environs by Noon (12.00p.m.) Thursday 19th March, 2020.
That international faculty and students are advised to liaise with the International Office on their current situation and plans.
The postgraduate students in the College of Health Sciences who are qualified Doctors are released back to their Counties.
That staff providing essential services will be allowed to access the University during the period of closure.”
Kenyatta University, University of Nairobi, USIU, JKUAT are among some of the Universities in Kenya that have issued closure notice over Coronavirus.
None of the University has provided a date on when they are expected to re-open.
University of Nairobi and Kenyatta University have also issued a directive banning all meetings and gathering within the intuition until further notice.
