Meru University Students Organization Secretary General Evans Njoroge Kidero shot dead

Meru University of Science and Technology Students Organization Secretary General Evans Njoroge alias Evans Kidero has been shot dead today. The student leader is said to be allegedly shot dead by the police as they engaged in a protest to have their school fee reduced.

Meru University Protest

The university had been earlier closed indefinitely for 3weeks (from the date of closure to today) due to fee increase protests. Below is a statement issued by the university administration earlier;

Statement on the Closure of Meru University over student Unrest

“The University Senate during a Special Senate meeting held on 1st February, 2018 at 10.00 a.m deliberated on the disruption of University activities due to students’ unrest.

 

It was agreed that the University Main Campus, Nchiru be closed indefinitely. All students must vacate the University Main Campus by 3.00 p.m today 1st February, 2018.”  (Source: Meru  University)

 

Demand for the sacking of Meru University VC Prof. Japhet K. Magambo

The students were also demanding for dismissal of the university vice chancellor Prof. Japhet K. Magambo for mismanagement.
