Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has announced that face to face re-opening of TTC, TVET and Universities has been postponed to 2021 January.
Why Re-opening of schools was postponed
While addressing the press on 30th July 2020, Education Cabinet Secretary, Prof. George Magoha indicated that COVID-19 situation in Kenya is worsening which makes it impossible to open schools on September 2020 as earlier anticipated. He cited an example of the University of Nairobi which has already lost four members of its staff to Covid-19.
He also noted that very few higher institutions of learning have implemented the required measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 as directed by the Ministry of Health.
Admission of First Years
On admission of new students, the ministry of education directed Universities to continue with enrollment of students online. Orientation of first years can also be done online. KCA university has already completed their first-year orientation online.
Graduation
Universities have been asked to ensure that final year students complete their studies and graduate virtually. Universities like Dedan Kimathi and Riara have already done their virtual graduations. Egerton University virtual graduation ceremony will take place on July 31st, 2020.
Online Learning and examinations
Online learning and examinations are in progress in most universities in Kenya. The ministry of education has however warned that online learning should continue but in strict adherence to the commission for university education (CUE) quality measures.
Students should be in constant communication with their colleagues and lecturers to be updated on virtual classes and exams schedules. Our subscribers will also be alerted via email on the latest education news.
