Education CS on when KNEC KCSE examiners will be paid

KNEC KCSE examiners payment update

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on June 7, 2023, appeared in parliament to respond to questions from members of parliament on a wide range of concerns in the education sector. One of the questions asked by Baringo North Constituency Member of Parliament Kipkoros Joseph was when teachers who marked KCSE 2022 examinations will be paid.  From exam invigilators, and supervisors to markers.

In response, CS Machogu indicated that the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) currently has outstanding bills amounting to a total of 2 billion Kenyan Shillings. This has hindered it from fulfilling its financial obligations, including the payment of examiners, contracted officials, and suppliers. Machogu emphasized that in order for KNEC to settle the pending bills, it needs additional funding.

The Education CS appealed to the members of parliament to allocate funds to KNEC for the payment of these contracted professionals. However, no specific timeline or dates were provided by CS Machogu regarding when the examiners would receive their payments.

Most teachers who engaged in the exam marking excise have indicated on social media and the press that they may not be available to offer their services in future marking exercises if the Ministry of Education fails to address the matter urgently.

UPDATE: KNEC examiners to be paid this week.
