Kaymu: Kenya’s largest online marketplace starts charging commissions for products sold

UPDATE: Kaymu  changed name to Jumia market place but the website and everything remains as it was.

After a whole year of free service, Kaymu (Jumia market) will now start charging commissions for items successfully sold on Kaymu. According to Joe Karoki, Head Of Commissions, Kenya, “With the introduction of commissions, Kaymu Sellers should definitely expect more business growth and better service from our end,” he says. Commissions charged vary per category, and will range from 3% to 15% per item value.

In  the short time Kaymu has been in the market, it has managed to acquire over 20,000 committed sellers, who are taken through vigorous training on how to use their system. Francis Mwangi is one such seller who has majorly benefited  from the online marketplace.  He is a 4th year student at The Technical  University Of Kenya studying Bachelor Of Science.  “I joined Kaymu because I just did not have money to start up a physical store, and I was desperately looking for a way to start paying my school fees,” says the 25 year old who trades as Shamborina Electronics on Kaymu. “One year on, I have not looked back, I get not less than 10 clients a day and I love the support I get from the Kaymu team.”

Kaymu not only prides itself to connecting buyers and sellers, but also unlike its competitors, the marketplace team follows up on each transaction to the end, and has implemented the Kaymu Safepay payment method that acts as a measure to curb online fraud.  “ We are happy about this new phase, our Sellers are very optimistic and full of energy, and we believe it’s the right time to do this,” concludes Joe Karoki.

UPDATE: Kaymu rebranded  to Jumia Market Place. So the brand name Kaymu does not anymore exist
