The Commission for University Education (CUE) forwarded a report to the ministry of education CS Matiangi proposing the banning of three universities for quality related issues.
The Universities are accused of awarding degrees without meeting the set standards and admitting students to study degree course that they did not qualify to do.
List of Universities proposed to be banned by CS Matiangi
- Gresta University
- Kiriri Women’s University of Science and Technology
- The East African University
For instance, Gresta University is accused of admitting Joho without looking at his academic qualification among other accusations. CUE rules state that all copies of certificates and academic transcripts presented as proof of attainment of Entry requirements for a particular qualification must be certified by an Advocate and Commissioner for Oaths, or the issuing university/institution.
The student being admitted to study a degree course must also have obtained Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with a Mean Grade of C+ and above or its equivalent, or a Diploma from an Accredited and Recognized Tertiary Institution with a minimum of a credit , or KCSE Mean Grade C (plain) or equivalent with a Post-Secondary Certificate and Diploma from a recognized institution, or The Kenya Certificate of Education (KCE), East African Certificate of Education (EACE) “Ordinary Level” Division II or equivalent, plus a Post-Secondary Certificate and a Diploma from a recognized institution, or The Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE) “Advanced Level” with two Principal passes and a subsidiary, or Pre-University course as a qualification for University entrance.
But it appears that Gretsa university admitted Joho to study in their university relying on a degree he obtained from a Ugandan University.
It is not clear whether Matiangi will ban the three mentioned universities but Time will tell.
