AU: Africa Union Chairperson elections 2017: Looked at winners

The race for the Africa Union Commision(AUC) chairperson sit begun in 2016 after  the expiry of Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma’s term as chair.  

 

 UPDATE: Chad’s Moussa Faki Mahamat (56 years) has emerged the winner and is the new AU chair

 
How do the AU elections Take place?
The 2017  AU chair elections will take place in the last week of January 2017.
To be appointed AU chair the candidate has to receive two-thirds majority of the votes. Each country has a single vote. This therefore requires the candidate to move from to country to country to seeking for votes.

Regional blocks also play a critical role in determining who will eventually become the winner.

 

Regional Community Block in Africa  are;

 

• Arab Maghreb Union (UMA)
• Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS)
• Community of Sahel-Saharan States (CEN-SAD)
• East African Community (EAC)
• Southern African Development Community (SADC)
• Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)

Amina Mohamed has been endorsed by the EAC block.

List of Candidates for AU Chairperson position, 2017

1. Venson-Moitoi (65 years)

 

Has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs of Botswana since 2014
2. Agapito Mba Mokuy (52 years) 

Has Served as the Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Equatorial Guinea.

3. Ambassador Amina Mohamed (56 years)

She is the foreign affair minister of Kenya.
4. Abdoulaye Bathily (70 years)

He is Diplomat and politician from Senegal
5. Moussa Faki Mahamat (56 years)

Former prime Minister of Chad

Moussa Faki Mahamat and Amina Mohamed  are the likely winners
