Nairobi School feeding program a step closer to start

Nairobi School feeding program county government meeting

CS Ezekiel Machogu on Thursday, June 8, 2023, held a discussion with Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja and Dagoretti South MP John Kiarie to deliberate on the implementation of the school feeding program in public primary schools within Nairobi. Other key officials that attended the meeting include Belio Kipsang, Basic Education PS, and Beatrice Inyangala, Higher Education and Research PS.

The County Government of Nairobi in collaboration with the Ministry of Education will under the Nairobi school feeding program provide meals to learners, particularly those residing in slums and informal settlements in Nairobi to improve learning motivation.

According to a report published by the Nairobi County Government in February 2023, nearly one million school-going children in Kenya miss school due to lack of access to meals. The report also shows that one in four children in Kenya receives only 30-40% of the recommended daily nutritional intake. This negatively impacts their ability to concentrate which in turn affects their academic progress.

The report further highlights that schools offering meals experience a 28% higher average enrollment rate compared to those that do not. This indicates that providing meals to students has a positive impact on school attendance and, consequently, on educational outcomes.
