Prof Stephen Kiama on fees increase

Here is an excerpt of the interview with UON VC Prof Kiama about the fee increase that was done on 20th September 2021.

“…There is no chance of increasing fees for students. For new students, they come to us, they say I want to do engineering, medicine, (etc.), we tell them this is the cost. Just like if you went to a hotel and they told you the cost of Chapati or Mandazi is this, you get it? You decide to take it or not take it. The problem is that that the one who has already ordered the Chapati and has eaten and knew this is the price (referring to continuing students), you cannot change the price without discussing with them. So, there is no fee increase, for anyone. Because those one ( referring to new students), we did not have them. They are coming now and that is the fees (new fees), you cannot talk about that is increase. Is that increase? That is not increase at all. Increase is for one who was with us, and we had told them the fee is this and now it has changed to that. We are saying as a university we have not increased fees. That one you can take from me. But the students who join us, we will give them a new fee structure…”

What the Vice-Chancellor is trying to insinuate is that new students will pay more school fees compared to continuing students doing the same course. However, he does not want to say that in plain words because of the fear of public uproar.

Standard Media report indicates that new students will now have to pay Ksh. 59,000 from the initial fee of Ksh. 26,500. That is more than double increase in fees. Accommodation fee has also been tripled.
