University Lecturers in Kenya will go on strike on Monday 20th January 2020 according to a notice issued by University Academic Staff Union (UASU) on 9th January 2020.
Why Lecturers are going on Strike on January 2020
According to UASU, university lecturers will be going on strike because the government through the ministry of education has failed to honor the 2017/2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) that would compel the government release Ksh. 8.8 billion for salary increase and house allowance.
The CBA would also see the University Academic staff get a four year progressive increase of salary by a range of 23.14% to 25.07%.
UASU CBA Summary Details
The CBA that UASU Refers to was signed on 28th October 2019 between UASU and the employer who is the government in the presence of Inter Public Universities Councils consultative forum (IPUCCF), The Federation of Kenya Employers (FKE) UASU.
The CBA was Supposed to be implemented on or before 30th November 2019 and cover the period of 1st July 2017 to 30th June 2021. It would thereafter continue to be in force until a new one is signed.
Number of University Academic Staff in Kenya
Data published by UASU shows that there are a total of 32,944 university staff in all 39 public universities in Kenya.
The 2019/2021 CBA would benefit the following academic staff: Graduate Assistant, Research Assistant, Assistant lecturer, junior research fellow, lecturer or research fellow, senior lecturer, senior research fellow, associate professor and professor.
