The Independent Police Oversight Authority has issued a press statement appealing to victims of police brutality during the University of Nairobi demos to record statements with them. This comes after the institution was yesterday closed indefinitely.
The senate arrived at the decision to close the institution following what they termed as deteriorating security situation. Yesterday students were ordered to vacate halls of residence by 9am.
In the appeal, IPOA’s CEO Dr. Joel Mabonga stated:
It has come to our attention that the University of Nairobi has been indefinitely closed. IPOA is kindly appealing to the twenty-six students injured during the police assault on Thursday, 28th September 2017, not to leave until they have recorded statements with IPOA. Recording of these statements will assist in fast tracking the investigation process.
Please visit the IPOA offices in Upper-hill. IPOA offices are located along 1st Ngong Avenue , ACK Garden Annex, 2nd floor.
Meanwhile, we urge patience and cooperation from all parties from whom we may require assistance to complete these investigations. We further request any member of the public with information that may assist us in our investigations to get in touch with us through 0742 404560, 0741-423-191, 0786-824-426 or 020 4906000.
The institution’s closure will definitely impede any investigations into cases of police brutality given most students, some of them victims, had to travel upcountry before giving their testimonies.

Police have however vehemently denied claims of use of excessive force. Inspector general of police Joseph Boinnet said any media circulating on the internet showing police assaulting students are fake.
