Kakamega is one of the most culturally diverse counties in Kenya given that it is host to over 10 indigenous sub-tribes. In addition, Kakamega town is cosmopolitan, playing host to Kenyans from other tribes, especially the Luo, Kalenjin, Kisii, and Kikuyu. This is attributable to the peaceful nature and hospitality of the Luhya people. Other than the people, Kakamega is blessed with beautiful terrain any nature lover will fall in love with. Be sure to visit the following places next time you are in Kakamega to make your trip memorable.
Rondo Retreat Centre
Located along, Shinyalu-Chepsonoi Road, Rondo provides an ideal getaway from the hustle and bustle of town life. The Retreat centre has exciting nature walks/drives, wild animals such as monkeys and birds, among other attractions. It also boasts of numerous indigenous and exotic trees. Accommodation is available should you wish to spend a night or two.
Crying Stone
The famous crying stone needs no introduction. The crying stone is actually two stones, one behemoth and a smaller one delicately balanced atop (at least thats how it appears). A stream of water used to flow from between the two stones, creating the crying impression. However, the water does not flow any more. Experts attribute this to locals planting trees around the stones. This attraction is located at Ilesi, along Kakamega-Kisumu road (about 7km from Kakamega town)
Kakamega Forest
The forest is home to thousands of indigenous trees. The forest is also home to friendly monkeys that are used to human interaction. It has beaten trails, clearings, a stream, among other features. It is ideal for nature walks, research and spiritual pilgrimages. The forest is accessible from Sichirai, along Kakamega-Webuye road.
Rosterman Mines
Located along the Kakamega-Mumias road, the gold mines offer a unique opportunity for first-hand observation of the local gold-mining industry. While industrial mining was banned by the county government, the mines still attract visitors including students and tourists.

Savona Island
Savona is not an island in the strictest sense of the word. The name is coined from the fact that it is a piece of dry land formed after a river folks and the two tributaries rejoin at another end. The retreat centre has been developed with manicured lawns, swimming pools, among other amenities. It is ideal for private conferences, wedding receptions, and garden parties.
