Increase of HELB allocations has remained a subject of discussion for a while. In response to this, student leaders from different universities in Kenya met Hon. Kenneth Okoth (Mp Kibra) at Kenya Parliament Building and deliberated on the matter.

According to a statement issued early today by Technical University of Mombasa Student Organization chair Benmark Nganga, the student leaders spent their time in parliament Building discussing the Helb Act amendment with Kibra Member of Parliament. The discussion gave rise to the following submissions that will be forwarded to parliament for discussion;

  • Helb allocation increased to a Minimum of ksh. 60,000 and a Maximum of ksh. 100,000.
  • The interest rate reduced from 4 p.c to 2 p.c and a grace period of 2years.
  • Increase Government allocation of HELB money during budgeting to ensure successful implementation.

The Bill amendments will be sponsored in parliament by Hon. Irungu Kangatti.

Benmark Nganga further stated that “this will mark a milestone in Kenyan University leadership under KUSO umbrella as the last time HELB allocation to students was adjusted was 1976.”
