The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has asked the Ministry of Education and the Treasury to urgently release capitation funds to schools. This call comes as many schools grapple with financial challenges that have forced them to implement food rationing for students.
Additionally, some teachers are facing the distressing prospect of auctioneers due to their inability to settle outstanding bills with food suppliers.
In light of these circumstances, the KUPPET national chair and Member of Parliament for Emuhaya Constituency Omboko Milemba is urging the government to suspend certain projects and redirect the funds toward schools. This is to ensure the smooth functioning of the education system without any disruptions.
Milembe emphasized that the delayed release of capitation funds poses a severe threat to the education system in Kenya, highlighting the potential for its collapse if the government fails to take immediate action.
The Ministry of Education CS Machogu had last week promised to release funds to schools in a week’s time which has not happened. He is expected to appear in parliament on June 7, 2023, to respond to questions from members of parliament regarding the state of education in Kenya.
