President William Ruto today launched Bodaboda Care, in a move aimed at empowering riders, providing health care services, and reducing road accidents caused by Bodabodas.
Bodaboda care
Bodaboda Care is a government program aimed at empowering and providing healthcare and emergency services to boda-boda riders in Kenya. To use Bodaboda care services, you must have adhered to National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Boda Boda regulations and be a member of a registered Sacco.
As part of the initiative, Health Cabinet Secretary Nakhumicha announced that all compliant boda boda riders would be enrolled in the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) scheme for one year at no cost. However, it was not specified how much the riders would need to pay for Bodaboda Care membership once the one-year period ends.
While launching the program, President Ruto emphasized the importance of training and licensing for boda-boda riders in order to reduce road accidents. He urged all riders to undergo training and obtain valid licenses before operating boda bodas. Additionally, he called upon the Ministry of Transport to collaborate with NTSA to reduce the cost of bodaboda training and driving licenses from Ksh. 10,000 to Ksh. 2,500.
On matters security, President Ruto emphasized the need for boda boda riders to join registered Saccos. This is to help identify and weed out individuals who may be using bodabodas for criminal activities.
